Excerpt from letter dated Georgia, Cobb County, July 2, 1864: "Yesterday we were entertained by marching backward and forward as a support for Armstrong's cavalry on Johnston's left wing."

Also included is a church program and two newspaper clippings regarding the death of Louisa Nicholes Brown, 1929.

A notebook of Captain Henry H. Carlton from 1860-circa 1880s. The notebook begins in 1860 as L. C. Cooper's notebook while a student at Franklin College (University of Georgia, Athens) and contains several literary pieces copied by Cooper. In 1861, Captain H. H. Carlton used the book to record the list of soldiers who served in the Troup Artillery during the Civil War. After the war someone, probably Edwin D. Newton, Secretary of the Survivors Association of Confederate Veterans of Northeast Georgia, added place of residence, death dates, and other data to the list. The notebook contains a mixture of various notes and includes material on Carlton's Company.

Early materials relate to Dawson Williams, father of Joseph, and include correspondence and bills. Of particular interest is correspondence of Joseph Williams, from camps near Atlanta, then Camp Anderson (Andersonville, Ga.); Dawson Williams, from camps near Atlanta, Georgia, and Brown Hospital, Milledgeville, Georgia; and Robert G. Williams, from camps near Chattanooga, Russellville, and Greeneville, Tennessee, and on the Shenandoah River, "Clark" County. Correspondence contains little information about battles or troop movements, and mainly discusses life for those at home, crops, and requests for food and clothing.

The collection consists of letters, written mainly by William C. Goggans and family, during the American Civil War, 1861-1865. Correspondences discuss army camp life, conditions and war news, and the wartime economy and psychology. Goggans wrote from camps in Richmond, Fredericksburg, James River, Cumberland Gap, Camp Jackson (Martinsburg), and Smithfield in Virginia; Milledgeville and Augusta, Georgia; and Meridian, Mississippi. Also contained in the collection is a letter from J. B. Walton to the General Commander, U.S. Forces at Savannah, Georgia, and Confederate civilian letters. Transcriptions of the letters are also included (2003).

The collection consists of the logbook of the Union screw steamer Western World from 1862. Daily entries by Samuel B. Gregory regard the weather, crew activities, food, and ship operations. Gregory writes about blockading activities off Charleston, S.C., and Savannah, Frederica, St. Simons, and Doboy Sound, Georgia; numerous encounters with Confederate ships and blockade-runners in the North Santee River (S.C.); and raids on several plantations. Three handwritten letters and a bill of sale are laid in the log.

Correspondences are dated St. Martin and Camp Dennison, Ohio; Virginia, Vicksburg and Camp Sherman, Mississippi; Larkinsville, Alabama; Cleveland, Tennessee; and East Point, Vining's Station, and Savannah, Georgia. Bickett describes marches, battles, rumors, positions, campaigns, and "a blockade runner that came into port." Excerpt from a letter dated February 8, 1864: "I will not build battles in the air."

Also included in the collection are a carte de visite of Andrew Taft in his uniform, his watch fob, and 2 ribbons from the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR).

The collection consists of letters from the Dickey and Reynolds brothers to Anna or William Dickey, and other family papers. The letters begin in 1861 on the Georgia coast as the soldiers go from Brunswick, Sapelo Island, Darien, and Savannah, and write from such places as Fort Tattnall, Mackay's Point, Fort Jackson, Causten's Bluff, Camp Millen and Camp Palmyra, and mention the firing on Fort Pulaski in April 1862. The letters describe details of the battles, health of the soldiers, camp life, and concern for families and farms at home.

This collection contains approximately 40 wartime letters written by the Blasingame family, including Confederate soldiers with the 54th Georgia Infantry. Civil War letters originate from the front lines in Richmond, Virginia, and Savannah, Atlanta, Fort Macon, and Marrieta, Georgia. This grouping includes a partly-printed parole for John S. Blasingame out of Macon, 1865, in which Blasingame is sworn under oath not to bear arms against the United States of America, give any information, or do any military duty whatsoever until regularly exchanged as a prisoner of war. Other materials in the collection include family correspondence from 1893-1894 and 1909 and 2 small photographs.

Colonel Olmstead writes to Captain E. P. Lawton to inform him that Major General David Hamlin of the Federal Army sent a communication demanding the immediate surrender of Fort Pulaski to the forces of the United States at Tybee Island. Olmstead informs Hamlin that he sent word he would not surrender, and shortly thereafer the Fort came under attack, which continued throughout the night. Cut off from relief, Olmstead eventually yields the fort.
